daytime, ext. discount store parking lot
A PICKUP DRIVER in an old, beat-up pickup truck pulls into the parking lot of a discount store. He finds a space between two cars and screeches to a stop. He swings open the door, which bangs the adjacent car and leaves a noticeable dent. The driver is oblivious to what has just happened. Approaching the car is the ANGRY MAN, who has witnessed the event and now comes rushing to the scene.
ANGRY MAN
Do you see what you've just done?
Pickup Driver has just exited the truck. Angry Man runs up to him and holds up his hands to stop Pickup Driver.
PICKUP DRIVER
What? What'd I do?
Angry Man points to the damage on the car.
ANGRY MAN
Can't you see the dent you just made?
PICKUP DRIVER
What dent?
Angry Man taps his finger on the damaged spot.
ANGRY MAN
(getting angrier)
That dent!
Pickup Driver bends down to take a closer look. He runs his fingers across the damage.
ANGRY MAN
(continued)
Didn't you hear the door hit the car? Why don't you watch what you're doing?
PICKUP DRIVER
Aw, it's hardly anything. Might of even been there beforehand.
Angry Man now takes a very close look at the damage. Pickup Driver stands up straight.
ANGRY MAN
I think I see some smudges of rust right here. Fresh smudges.
Angry Man now stands up straight as well. He points toward the truck.
ANGRY MAN
(continued)
You know, when you're driving a big bucket of rust like that you need to pay attention to what's around you. Show a little respect for other people's property. Hey, are you gonna do something about this?
Pickup Driver shrugs, shakes his head and starts walking toward the store. Angry Man's mouth is agape and his arms are out in a helpless gesture. Then he runs after Pickup Driver.
ANGRY MAN
Hey, I bet you don't even have insurance on that hunk of crap. Am I right? Huh? Yeah, I thought so. I'm calling the police!
Pickup Driver stops, turns around, and looks back and forth between his truck and the Angry Man, who has now pulled out a cell phone. Pickup Driver's expression has now changed from apathetic to worried.
PICKUP DRIVER
(nervously)
Okay, okay. No need to bring in the cops. Maybe, uh, we can, you know, come to some understanding here.
Angry Man stops and puts the cell phone away.
ANGRY MAN
Well, maybe we can.
Pickup Driver pulls out his wallet and starts thumbing through the bills inside.
PICKUP DRIVER
So, what do you think will cover that? I've got, oh, four-fifty that I can give you.
Angry Man thinks it over, looks back at the dent, and then back at the Pickup Driver.
ANGRY MAN
Hmmm. I suppose that'll do. Yeah, that's fine.
Pickup Driver hands over a wad of bills. He gets back in his truck, starts it up, backs out (carefully) and drives away. Angry Man has stepped out of the way of the truck. While counting the cash, Angry Man starts walking toward the car, where he stops briefly to look again at the damage. Satisfied with the cash, he stuffs it into a pocket and walks around the back of the car.
He stops again on the driver's side of the damaged car to pull out his car keys. But he continues walking past the damaged car and out of frame. We then hear a car being unlocked, a door opening and closing, a motor starting, and finally a transmission shifting into gear. We then see that the car in the adjacent spot is backing out of the stall and its driver comes into frame. We see it is Angry Man, who is now smiling. He then drives forward and out of frame. The damaged car remains parked. Moments later a woman, carrying store bags and accompanied by a child, approaches the damaged car, unlocks it, etc.
