INT. CONTROL TOWER – DAY
GUY 1 and GUY 2, air traffic controllers, sit with headsets staring at monitors. Except as noted, they cover the microphones when not talking to pilots.
GUY 1
Hey. Who you working on now?
GUY 2
Seven Fifty One from New York. You?
GUY 1
Two thirty eight from L.A.
They look at each other a moment. Guy one pulls out a roll of bills and slaps it down.
GUY 1
A hundred on two thirty eight.
GUY 2
(slapping bills on table)
You're on.
GUY 1
(to flight 238 pilot)
Roger two three eight tango, this is the tower. You are cleared for approach. Hold course due east.
GUY 2
(to flight 751 pilot)
Roger seven five one romeo, this is the tower. You are cleared for landing. Hold course due west to runway sierra two niner.
They watch for a moment, then:
GUY 1
(to Guy 2)
Here they come.
(to flight 238 pilot)
Roger two three eight. Steady as she
goes. Over.
GUY 2
(to flight 751 pilot)
Roger that seven five one. You are right
on the money. Over.
Guy 1 and Guy 2 grow more tense, sit up straighter, and root for their pilots. They work themselves into a frenzy of anticipation.
GUY 1, GUY 2
(alternating lines)
(covering mikes)
That's it baby. Nice and steady.
Keep it up, keep it up.
That's it, come on.
Keep her straight.
Come on 238, don't let me down.
Let's go 751, Stay the course.
Nose down.
Focus...focus...make him blink.
The tension on their faces becomes almost unbearable. Guy 1 suddenly pounds his fist in the air, defeated.
GUY 1
Aaaaaaww … No!
GUY 2
(scooping up the cash)
Yes, yes! Come to papa!
GUY 1
(not covering his mike)
Oh, 238, you let me down.
(realizing the pilot can hear)
What? Sorry two three eight. I said, "You are down." No, your evasive action was proper. Yes, it was a near one. We'll report it.
GUY 2
(into his mike)
Roger seven five one. We'll report that.
Thank you.
Guy 1 and Guy 2 sit. Guy 2 beams, while Guy 1 appears a bit miffed.
GUY 2
(looking at his monitor)
Okay, I've got nine three nine from Boston on final.
GUY 2
(looking at his monitor)
Here comes 693 from Frisco.
They look at each other, and quickly throw money on the table.
