INT. CLASSROOM IN A CHURCH

FATHER PATRICK is standing in front of a small class of Sunday school students just prior to the start of Mass.
JOHNNY, a shy little boy, is seated toward the back.

FATHER PATRICK
Who can tell me the Christmas story: about the Holy Family, the city of Bethlehem,
the stable where Baby Jesus was born?
All the children raise their hands, except Johnny. Father Patrick scans the classroom.

FATHER PATRICK
It's such a blessing to see such eager children. Mmmm, let me see.
He sees Johnny sitting in the back, pretty much trying to remain invisible.
Father Patrick knows Johnny is quite shy, so he wants to build up Johnny's confidence.

FATHER PATRICK
Johnny? Can you tell me the Christmas story?
Johnny stands up slowly.

JOHNNY
Well, I'll try, but I don't remember things sometimes, like names.

FATHER PATRICK
Go ahead anyway, because I would like you to tell the story in front of the congregation today.

JOHNNY
Okay. Well, I know the man and the woman, uh... um...

FATHER PATRICK
Joseph and Mary?

JOHNNY
Yea, Joseph and Mary. Well, they had to go to Bethlehem and couldn't stay in the inn so they
went to a stable where, um, the baby, uh...

FATHER PATRICK
(cutting Johnny off)
Johnny, I've got an idea that will help you remember those names.
Father Patrick picks up a notepad and jots a few words on it.

FATHER PATRICK
I've written the names of the Holy Family – Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus - on these slips of paper.
Just keep these with you and look at them if you forget. I know you'll do fine.
Father Patrick walks over to Johnny and hands him three slips of paper. Johnny looks at the slips.
He's puzzled at first, then an idea strikes and he smiles.

INT. CHURCH

Father Patrick is at the pulpit in front of the congregation.

FATHER PATRICK
Before I start my homily, I thought we could hear the story of Christmas from the point of view of a child.
Johnny? Can you come up here and tell what you know about Christmas?
Johnny walks up to the front of the church. He is clearly nervous. Father Patrick gives an encouraging nod.

JOHNNY
Once there was a man and his name was... uh... His name was, mmmm...
Johnny frowns, turns to his right, looks down toward his pocket, and tries to secretly look at
the slip of paper he has placed there.

JOHNNY
Joseph! That's it. His name was Joseph. And he had a wife and her name was... oh, her name was... um...
He turns to his left and looks at the slip in his left pocket.

JOHNNY
Mary! Yes, her name was Mary.
(now with more confidence)
And they had a little boy, and his name was... And his name was...
Johnny turns to one side, looks for the slip he has tucked under his belt, then turns back to the congregation.

JOHNNY
(proudly)
Joe Boxer!

Father Patrick puts his on his forehead and shakes his head.
